Dermal Fillers Aftercare

Following your dermal filler treatment, some common injection-related reactions may occur:

Redness:
Any redness should begin to reduce within 6–24 hours after treatment. Clean, light makeup may be applied approximately 4 hours post-treatment to help cover any redness.

Swelling:
Avoid exposing the treated area to intense heat or extreme cold for two weeks following treatment. A clean, cool pack may be applied directly to the treated area to help reduce swelling. Non-prescription anti-inflammatory medication may also be helpful, providing you are medically suitable to take it. Please note, however, that anti-inflammatories may increase or prolong bruising.

Bruising:
Dermal filler injections can occasionally cause bruising, although this is not always expected. The eye contour area is the most likely area to bruise. Any bruising should be temporary. If you are taking medication or dietary supplements that may affect platelet function or bleeding time, bruising may be more noticeable or last longer. Aspirin and similar medications may also increase the likelihood of bruising. Arnica cream and/or tablets may help to minimise bruising and support faster healing. Makeup may be applied to cover bruising approximately 4 hours post-treatment.

Tenderness or Discomfort:
Tenderness or discomfort at the injection site may occur for 24–72 hours after treatment. Non-prescription pain relief may be taken if required and if you are medically suitable to do so.

Itching:
Itching may occur for 7–14 days following treatment. Non-prescription antihistamines may help to ease this, providing they are suitable for you.

These reactions are usually temporary and often settle within a few days. Many people are able to return to normal activities on the same day. However, everyone responds differently, and some people may experience these effects for a little longer. In most cases, they typically resolve within 7–14 days as the skin returns to normal.

It is advisable to:

  1. Refrain from touching the treated areas with your hands until the pores have had a chance to close. This is to reduce the risk of infection at the site of injection.
  2. Makeup can be applied approximately 4 hours post-treatment – mineral is recommended.
  3. It is recommended that the use of soaps, other than those recommended by your practitioner, on the treated skin area is restricted until the redness subsides and where possible warm/tepid water and/or gentle skin cleansers are used for cleansing. Do not scrub. Pat to dry only.
  4. Refrain from intensive sunlight (e.g. sunbeds and sunbathing), saunas, steam bath for a period of at least two weeks.
  5. Avoid electrolysis, waxing, bleaching of the treated area for 72 hours.
  6. Do not swim in chlorinated water for approximately 14 days.
